Video of The 3D Show – Episode 1: Introduction to 3D Scanning, Point Clouds, and Reality Capture Workflows

Introduction

What is up everyone? My name’s Sebastian, and welcome to The 3D Show. We’re in an attic that’s not insulated. So imagine living in Canada with a non-insulated attic and working from that attic. What’s the purpose of the show?

What Is The 3D Show About?

Well, it’s called The 3D Show for a reason. We talk about 3D laser scanning, 3D technology, reality capture, photogrammetry, Nerf, Luna. We talk about the whole nine yards. Whether we’re talking about SLAM technology, terrestrial laser scanners, etc.—all of that is part of the show.

Core Focus: Democratizing Point Cloud Knowledge

But I think the main central focus of the show is about the democratization of the knowledge of the point cloud and the use case behind reality capture technology.
We won’t get too much into the metrology side, but we’ll get more into the point cloud side and how we bring that into your workspace—
how do we bring point cloud data, and the knowledge of it, into the workflow of an architect, an engineer, a construction worker, an industrial plant manager? How do we bring it into an automobile facility?

Understanding Point Cloud Data

We’re talking about this whole digital factory.
Well, in order to talk about that, we need to know about the data itself—what brings it, the nuances behind it.
When and where do we use point cloud data?

This, by the way, is the whole purpose of the show.
It’s part of my passion. I really like the idea of using point cloud in your workflows.
Part of my hope is to talk about different industries, cover an entire project from beginning to end, and explain when and where we use the data.
When and where do we start capturing—and when and where do we finish?

Technology With Purpose

Because there’s no point in talking about technology if it doesn’t work for you.

In many ways, when we talk about tech, we get into this whole system of, “Oh my gosh, this is revolutionary, it’s going to change the world.”
But if it doesn’t solve issues like downtime, reducing building materials, improving communication—and you can calculate that, by the way—
then the ROI isn’t there.

Why Invest in Reality Capture?

So what’s the point of investing in expensive equipment—like a 3D laser scanner—if you don’t even see the use case for it?

I’ve had the privilege of sitting down with managers in different industries over the past half-decade.
I’ve worked in oil and gas, architecture, construction, automotive—and in each, the use case was different.

But the core question always came up:

“How do I bring this in so I can reduce cost?”
“How do I present this to my boss?”
“How do I scan the entire plant?”

What’s Coming Next on the Show

Throughout the show, in future episodes, I’ll start with high-level concepts like:

  • What is a point cloud?
  • What can you get out of it?

Then we’ll go deeper:

  • How do you scan with a terrestrial laser scanner?
  • How do you use SLAM?
  • How do you merge both datasets?

And finally—we’ll dive into real-world projects.

We’re here to learn, have fun, ask questions, and put in our two cents.

You can also ask me general questions and I’ll do my best to answer them—on-site, with real clients.

Final Thoughts

So much to learn, so much to talk about.
Don’t want to nerd out too much…

My name’s Sebastian. Welcome to The 3D Show.

Welcome to the attic. I’m somewhere in Eastern Canada.
Let me know—what kind of targets do you see above?
Answer in the comments below.

Looking forward to the next video.

And by the way—Laurie, thank you very much for all the edits and cuts. Looking forward to it.

Ciao ciao, everyone.

Personal Thoughts:

Launching The 3D Show with this first episode was a grounding experience—quite literally from an uninsulated attic in Canada. But that’s the point. 3D scanning isn’t just about their exciting tech, but practical, usable data. Over the years, I’ve seen too many teams get caught up in buzzwords and miss the real value of point cloud data. This episode is how I started; from the ground up, breaking down what matters, what’s hype, and how reality capture can fit into your workflow, and make it smarter, faster, and more cost-effective.
